When I logged into my ChatGPT account, I noticed that the entire history of all the previous chats on the platform were no longer there. Instead, I had this message:
“Not seeing what you expected here? Don’t worry, your conversation data is preserved! Check back soon.”
This message started appearing yesterday and it seems that their “soon” is not similar to mine. Which kind of sucks, because I had some previous conversations with Chat GPT that were really useful and “work in progress” kind of things. Here is mine:
But fortunately, there is an easy way to get back your previous conversations in Chat GPT, in a similar fashion to my previous article where I shared how to fix Network Errors in ChatGPT.
How to get back your previous chats in ChatGPT
There is an easy way to get your chat history back (instead of waiting for the devs to fix it):
1. Log out of your account and close the browser window.
2. Delete your cache & cookies from your browser. You can learn how to do it on Chrome here. If not sure for other browsers, a quick google search will help.
3. After cleaning your cache and cookies, restart your browser and log back in to Chat GPT.
This should fix the problem. If it doesn’t you have another option: try logging in with a different browser. E.g. if you are using Chrome, download and install Firefox or Edge and log in there.
Why is the Chat GPT conversation history disappearing?
This isn’t the first time that this bug occurred and probably it won’t be the last. I’ve read on reddit that some people were seeing other people’s chat histories in their account and this is why they took all of them out.
Not really sure if that’s the case, but it seems to be something serious, as the problem persists – it’s not easy to fix by the devs, it appears.
However, using the simply trick I shared above, you should be fine and get back your valuable chat history.
IMPORTANT: In order to prevent valuable chats from disappearing in the future, you can install browser extensions that save your chats as documents either in Google docs or externally.
This problem is affecting all users, so it doesn’t appear to matter if you’re paying for the service. You can read more about ChatGPT vs ChatGPT Plus in my previous article.
You know now how to get your chat history back in ChatGPT and continue using the previous chats. Hopefully this was useful and saved you a ton of headaches.
As I said, this happened before and probably will happen again, so from now on, the best option would be to save / export your chats locally – at least those that are important and would cause a lot of pain if lost completely.
And now that things are better, why not relax a bit and enjoy one of the games you can play with ChatGPT?
