Surprise or not, a new Call of Duty game has been announced and this one is surely making many of the fans of the franchise happy. Titled Call of Duty: WW2 (or something along the lines, since we don’t have an official confirmation yet), the game gets back to the series’ origins and offers us a nice World War II treat.

I’m one of those old gamers who still remembers the hatred towards World War 1 and World War 2 games that filled the world about ten years ago, when every first person shooter game launched was taking place during one of the humanity’s great wars. Crysis came, then, as a breath of fresh air and the World Wars were soon forgotten by the gaming community.

But too much is too much apparently, as gamers started to get bored of all the futuristic action and started to demand shooters inspired by history once more. EA was first to respond to the demands with the release of Battlefield 1 last year and the sales of the game were extremely high. No surprise to hear that Activision is ready for a piece of the pie and delivers CoD WW2.

At the moment, we don’t have an official confirmation of the story, but all the pieces seem to fall together quite nicely. Even more, some leaked images from the upcoming Call of Duty game were leaked by TheFamilyVideoGamers YouTube channel in a recent video (the leaked images begin at 2:20).

There are a few screnshots (artwork, actually) that show us a bit of the setting of the next game and what seems to be concepts for the physical package, without revealing too much though. The game will be developed by Sledgehammer Games who have been working on the title for the past three years following Activision’s cycle program (they also have Treyarch and Infinity Ward working on CoD games in order to be able to release high quality titles every year).

As I said, there is no official confirmation from Activision regarding the next Call of Duty game and its title might be different from what we have right now, but it seems very likely that we will indeed get a CoD title set in the World War 2 simply because that’s what the community wants to get.

We’ll keep you posted if we find more details about CoD: WW2.
